Barriers To Freedom: Rohingya Citizenship
Rohingya have been in Burma for centuries, as indigenous people living on their ancestral land, however, they are not recognized as one of Burma’s 135 ethnic groups. The discriminatory 1982 Burma Citizenship Law makes it almost impossible for the Rohingya to gain citizenship.
Although Suu Kyi acknowledged the laws are not fair she will these laws will be used to determine Rohingya citizenship. Suu Kyi and the Burma government should repeal the 1982 Burma Citizenship Law. They must provide the Rohingya people with full Burmese citizenship. Foreign governments must protect the Rohingya from Burmese genocide.
