BURMA UPDATE JUNE 29, 2022:
Education: Clearly world leaders don’t really care about children or the future. Over 200 million children have had their education interrupted by conflict and mass displacement, with 78.2 million dropping out of school entirely. In Burma this disruption has long affected the Rohingya, and currently impacts their children as refugees in Bangladesh, but more and more it impacts all children across Burma. This week we discussed these concerns with Rohingya leaders, with UNHCR, and in a meeting with the Malaysian Government. In the camps, Rohingya youth leaders have found their voice on worsening camp conditions, though it is framed as a call for “Going Home.”But how will Rohingya go home without their rights and homes restored?
Last week, Burmese military rulers transferred former State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi into solitary confinement. Meanwhile their attacks on both democracy and religious freedom are disrupting Burma and the entire region. JFA staffer Sharifah Shakirah is speaking on this at the International Religious Freedom Summit in Washington DC this week.
With other JFA staff, Burma Task Force is currently meeting with Senators to encourage them to pass the Burma Act, including sanctions on the Burmese military. There are far fewer sanctions on Burmese genocide perpetrators than on Putin’s Russia. If you wish to participate in online meetings with elected officials please contact us at adem@justiceforall.org
