Burmese Generals Support Russian Invasion
The attack on Ukraine has understandably resulted in widespread sanctions against Russia. If the world had instituted the same level of sanctions on Burma after the Rohingya genocide, would the military coup have happened? And yet in both cases, China is unwilling to prioritize human rights protections, a very bad influence on other nations.
The Burmese military has expressed strong support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while the Burmese Ambassador appointed by the previous leadership and representing the National Unity Government voted to condemn it.
Last week, Tatmadaw soldiers took 80 small children hostage in a school at the village of Chin Pone. Once they were released, numerous victims of torture and murder were found in the school. The military has also been busy setting numerous villages on fire. Meanwhile, for the Peasants’ Day holiday, the military junta released five Burmese celebrities who had been previously jailed for anti-coup resistance.
The US Government is planning to host the ASEAN Summit on March 28. Though US officials have refused to invite Burmese military leaders, they have left the door open for “civilians” associated with the military junta. Why doesn’t our government ask the National Unity Government instead?
