The Burmese government has refused to allow the Rohingya Muslim minority to vote since 2015, and we ask that these voting rights be restored. Democracy cannot be based on oppression or exclusion of minority populations. Despite these serious concerns, the international community has helped fund the Burmese election, for example with the mVoter2020 app, launched last week to improve voter awareness, and unfortunately labeling at least two Rohingya candidates as “Bengali”, implying they are immigrants from Bangladesh.
Action: Tell United Nations affiliated program International IDEA to ensure that the word “Rohingya” is included to describe the candidates.
