Background:
Profiting from widespread desperation in the refugee camps of Coxs Bazar, smugglers have dramatically increased trafficking in collusion with local officials in Bangladesh and in Burma. This criminal activity has led to hundreds of Rohingya deaths in late 2022 and early 2023. Men, women and children starve to death, or drown when their boats run out of fuel, or capsize on the way to Malaysia. Still others are raped, taken hostage and murdered by criminals. Other refugees are arrested and turned over to the Burmese military.

Reacting to the failure of neighboring nations to save Rohingya lives, the United Nations (especially UNHCR) has begun to speak out, responding to pressure from human rights organizations like Burma Task Force as well as from Rohingya refugees themselves.

The following videos tell the story of the impact on Rohingya families. Thank you to Rohingya journalist Saiful Arakani for providing these videos and to Abdullah Habib for providing the subtitles.
