China and Russia once again block a press statement on Burma (Myanmar)
Late last week the ASEAN envoy to Burma made a presentation to the Security Council behind closed doors. However, China and Russia once again blocked even a press statement on Burma, that would have included mention of the Rohingya as well as do-nothing ASEAN efforts.
Over 100 Rohingya refugees were arrested in Bangladesh, one of a series of mass arrests as restrictions on refugee movement become harsher. Though the UNHCR head visited the camps only a week ago, and called for more education, training and other social services, the Bangladesh government continues to treat the refugees like prisoners in a prison.
On May 31, 2022, Amnesty International released an important new report on Burmese military violence since the coup. Without forceful outside intervention it is highly of likely that displaced Rohingya and others will be able to return in the foreseeable future.
