Statement of Condolences Following Earthquake in Burma
Justice For All – Burma Task Force
March 29, 2025
Justice For All’s Burma Task Force expresses its deepest condolences to the people of Burma in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck the region on March 28, 2025. All human life is important, but we are especially grieved to learn that numerous Muslims gathered for Jumu’ah (Friday) prayers have lost their lives in this tragedy. Reports to Justice For All indicate that more than 20 masjids collapsed, including one historic mosque over 240 years old. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un — truly, to God we belong and to Him we shall return.
This tragedy compounds the suffering already endured by Burma’s vulnerable religious population, who continue to face systemic discrimination, marginalization, and neglect under the military junta, as well as militant groups such as the Arakan Army. The devastation caused by the earthquake must not be allowed to exacerbate the inequalities against these oppressed people.
We call upon the Burmese authorities to ensure that all relief and reconstruction efforts are inclusive, non-discriminatory, and equitable. Aid must reach all communities, Burmese, Rohingya Muslims and internally displaced persons, many of whom are often excluded from government support.
We further urge the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and its member states to provide targeted humanitarian assistance to the most affected regions, with special attention to the needs of Muslim and other religious communities. This is a critical moment for the international community to demonstrate solidarity, uphold human dignity, and ensure that no community is left behind in the recovery process.
Justice For All reaffirms its commitment to the people of Burma and to the principle that all lives deserve equal protection, care, and dignity — regardless of ethnicity or religion.
